A Cavan woman is joining 81 others on a trip to Singapore to compete in a Dragon Boat race to support breast cancer survivors.
Darlene Prager, president and founder of Canadians Abreast, is set to leave for Singapore this coming Sunday where three crews of Canadians Abreast will compete against teams from across the world in the first breast cancer Dragon Boat world championship.
Out of the 82 women attending, 60 will actually compete while 22 are there to offer support.
Canadians Abreast Messengers of Hope is made up of breast cancer survivors. The members come from across Canada.
“We are all breast cancer survivors, we kick butt in whatever we do and we live life to the fullest,†says Ms Prager.
The national team was formed in 2003 and competed in New Zealand. In 2004, the 44 women went to South Africa and came home with a bronze medal, while in 2005 they returned home from Berlin with the silver. They have also raced in New York, Houston, and all across Canada.
They arrive in Singapore on Tuesday. After their trip to Singapore they are headed to Thailand, Beijing and other parts of China.
Some women had to cancel this year either due to a resurgence of cancer or family members that have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
“We spread awareness, give hope and meet women all over the world and become best friends,†Ms Prager says.
